Step Up and Take Charge Empowerment Yarning Circles
1.1 Be Accountable
The significance of yarning circles—whether used to deliver these programs or as community gatherings—lies in their ability to foster accountability. This is vividly portrayed in the film Mad Bastards, which illustrates how the exchange of stories and mutual support within these circles builds trust, inspires hope, and catalyses change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. By choosing to participate, individuals hold themselves accountable, reinforcing their commitment to stay on track in their journey toward change.
1.2 Be Responsible
Successful change hinges on an individual’s commitment to transformation, rather than relying solely on the message or its delivery. True progress depends entirely on participants’ personal openness and dedication.
1.3 Holistic Wellness
Lasting change emerges when we address every facet of life. Participants are encouraged to establish yearly goals accompanied by weekly actions to realise these objectives. Through this process, they learn that perfection isn’t the aim; rather, it’s the belief in the potential for improvement that can truly enhance their lives.
1.4 Communication
Participants explore strategies for effective communication and relationship-building, rooted in understanding others through verbal and non-verbal cues. The module examines how an individual’s communication patterns and emotional development respond to neglect, verbal, or non-verbal abuse—often manifesting as anger (blaming others) or depression (blaming themselves). By embracing love, truth, and empathy, deeper connections can override these patterns, offering redemption through intentional healing and restoration.
1.5 Walking in Two Worlds
This module shows how stand tall and proud while living in a society strongly influenced by European culture. When the program is delivered at the AMC the focus is how to do this in the prison community.
