Navigating between traditional Aboriginal or Torres Strait culture and modern Australian society can be a challenge. This program will provide participants with strategies to manage living in these two worlds. Managing two worlds isn’t about choosing one over the other but about finding harmony between them. Each person’s journey is unique, and what works best might differ for everyone. Embracing heritage is a strength, and participants are encouraged to let it guide them in how they engage with the broader society.

Culture

Learn from elders, stories, languages and traditional practices to engage deeply with your cultural heritage. Participants will see how community can strengthen their cultural identity. Events provide a sense of belonging and continuity with culture roots (eg festivals, ceremonies and community gatherings.

Integration with Modern Life

Develop skills to navigate both worlds effectively. This includes understanding and adapting to different communication styles, social norms, and expectations in professional settings while maintaining your cultural identity.

Advocacy and Representation

Engage with support organisations that advocate for your rights, ensuring your and your community's voice is heard.

Balancing Time

Allocate time for cultural alongside modern life commitments. This might mean scheduling specific days or times for cultural activities, family gatherings, or community service.

Mental and Emotional Health

Build or maintain strong connections with family, friends, and community members who understand both worlds. Incorporate traditional healing practices for mental health alongside modern therapy if needed, recognising the value in holistic health approaches.

Education for Others

Addressing myths and fostering understanding with others. Elders are often the keepers of cultural knowledge. Seek their advice on how to live in both worlds, as they might have navigated similar paths.
